Aging In Place: How Planning Ahead Can Help Meet Your Long-Term Goals

AgeInPlace

Many older adults would prefer to remain in their own homes as long as possible, rather than move to a nursing home. Planning ahead can help you achieve this goal. Our Tampa elder care attorney explains more about aging in place and practical steps to take now

What Is Aging In Place?

The term ‘aging in place’ refers to the desire among many older adults to retain their independence and remain in their own homes, rather than spending their final years in a nursing home or assisted care facility. Unfortunately, the impacts of aging and not having the proper supports in place often necessitate this type of move.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, roughly 70 percent of all older adults over the age of 65 will eventually require some type of long-term services and supports (LSSS). This includes:

  • Help with meals, cleaning, and other household tasks;
  • Help with grooming and other personal needs;
  • Help with getting appropriate medical care and attending doctor visits.

While family members and friends may be willing to assist with these tasks to help you achieve your goal of aging in place, the need often becomes too great. Living on your own may become unsafe and impractical, or your health may deteriorate to the point of requiring more intensive care. Advance planning can help to prevent this.

Actions To Take Now That Can Help You Age In Place

If you, like many older adults, want to remain in your own home and age in place, it is important to act now to prevent future problems that make you more likely to need nursing home care. The National Institute on Aging recommends the following:

  • Protect your health: Attend regular doctor visits, manage chronic health conditions, get recommended vaccines, and make exercise and a healthy diet part of your daily routine.
  • Make safety a priority: Slips and falls often result in injuries that require nursing home care. Wear the appropriate shoes, eliminate unsafe conditions in your home, and use a cane or other assistive device, if needed.
  • Assess your current living situation: Is your current home suitable for aging in place? You may need to downsize or make modifications, such as installing grab bars and moving frequently used items so they are easily reached.
  • Consider support services: Home health aids, meal delivery, house cleaners, and transportation services are all expensive. Our Tampa elder law attorneys can assist you in Medicaid planning, which can provide greater access to the various types of supports you need to age in place while helping you avoid heavy out-of-pocket costs.
